“Reading Maketh a Full Man” or Woman or Child.

Reading TTYL, IMHO, LOL, IDK, FWIW and other pop culture terms, most often at our fingertips, has become such an everyday occurance.  I’ll call out “BRB” when I head out the door without a thought that I’m not actually saying anything. OMG, it’s crazy.

One requirement for students at our elementary school is to always be prepared to NIB.

Do you NIB?

NIB stands for ‘Nose In Book’, and students carry a book daily.

So this string of a few letters makes me think of pages and pages of of letters. Raise your hand if you love to read.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”

― George R.R. Martin

“I can’t imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once.”

–C.S. Lewis

“People ask me if there are going to be stories of Harry Potter as an adult. Frankly, if I wanted to, I could keep writing stories until Harry is a senior citizen, but I don’t know how many people would actually want to read about a 65 year old Harry still at Hogwarts playing bingo with Ron and Hermione.”

– J. K. Rowling

“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.”

― Lemony Snicket

“In a good book, the best is between the lines.”

–Swedish Proverb

“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.”

– Jacqueline Kennedy

“Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.”

– Groucho Marx

“Reading Maketh A Full Man.” by Francis Bacon, was inscribed to me in a gift of a thesaurus from a teacher in elementary school. No, I did not go to school with Francis Bacon, but I have always remembered the quote.  At the time the quote puzzled me (“OK fine, but I’m a girl”). But most of the students in the group were boys, so I figured majority rules. However, I did devour books, and still do when time allows, so I’m good on the ‘full’ part.

Think I’ll head off for some NIB time now.Photo: Perhaps we need to write a post about how to live with a bookaholic?

The teacher that gave me the book? Her name was Mrs. Goodnight, how perfect was that? THX MRS G. I still have the book.

She also told me I should write; better late than never.

TTYL, LOL, IDK,  IMHO, FWIW, BRB, OMG = Talk To You Later, Laugh Out Loud, I Don’t Know, In My Humble Opinion, For What It’s Worth, Be Right Back, Oh My Gosh
