Silver and Gold

Silver and Gold, hmmmm, am I thinking of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer?   One of those Christmas in July things?

Yukon Cornelius: You’re going to stay with me and we’ll all be rich with the biggest silver strike this side of Hudson Bay. Silverrrrrrr!
Hermey: I thought you wanted gold.
Yukon Cornelius: I changed my mind.

No and yes. Yes.  It is one of my favorite Christmas specials, but no, that’s not what I’m heading for.

Silver and Gold, as in the campfire/scout song, ‘make new friends and keep the old’.  I spent time with a collection of friends this past week!

I  have been fortunate to tend this collection from 6th grade to college to work to momhood.  This week was unusual and wonderful visiting in person.  Two friends were in town from Southern California. (Rare events as they both enjoy a more consistent presence of sunshine than the Pacific Northwest offers.)  Plus one pal from Walla Walla, we have 7 (!) children between us and an hour is an occasional achievement to carve out. Two more college buddies joined in from different ends of the lake.

My Silver and Gold week included coffee with a friend from 7th grade, lunch with three sorority sisters, and  BBQ dinner with another jr. high friend & our families.  Nothing like a good laugh with someone who knew you when you were 13 or 21! Time rewinds in such a fun way.  Hmmm, I also just planned a walk with a baby-group mom to talk about our now college students. And we’re heading out to the cabin of one of my college roommates next week.

“A friend is a gift you give yourself.” ― Robert Louis Stevenson

So it IS Christmas in July!

I remember the Silver and Gold song from my own Bluebird troop.  I learned the second verse when my daughters were Brownies.

Additional verses:

Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.

A circle is round,
it has no end.
That’s how long,
I will be your friend.

A fire burns bright,
it warms the heart.
We’ve been friends,
from the very start.

You have one hand,
I have the other.
Put them together,
We have each other.

Silver is precious,
Gold is too.
I am precious,
and so are you.

You help me,
and I’ll help you
and together
we will see it through.

The sky is blue
The Earth is green
I can help
to keep it clean

Across the land
Across the sea
Friends forever
We will always be

May you enjoy some Silver and Gold moments too this summer!

Or, a bit less sweet, but also true,

“You’ll always be my friend because you know too much!”

Backgammon anyone?
